Steel Fell

Steel Fell

Grid Reference: NY 31944 11157
Height: 553 metres/1814 feet

"Travellers north on the main road over Dunmail Raise are accompanied on the wewst side soon after leaving Town Head, Grasmere, by a rising ridge of high ground that culminates in the formidable wall of rough ground overlooking the pass itself and then falls abruptly to valley level before Thirlmere is reached. This familiar height is Steel Fell."
A Wainwright

The steep fellside to the west of Dunmail Raise climbs to the broad summit plateau of Steel Fell, with it's unique views over Thirlmere towards Skiddaw and Blencathra.

The ridge to the west continues to Calf Crag where a good horseshoe route can be followed over Gibson Knott to Helm Crag, or alternatively climbing a little higher to the summits of High Raise or Ullscarf.

Good shorter routes can also be had by descending into the valleys on either side of the Steel Fell ridge, Wythburn to the north and especially Greenburn to the south, a wonderful secluded valley.
