"Prominent in all views of the Lakeland fells from the lesser heights of South Westmorland is the high whale backed mass of Red Screes, rising in a graceful curve from the head of Windermere and descending abruptly at it's northern end." |

Red Screes is known to many who travel the road over Kirkstone Pass, between Ambleside and Patterdale, from Kirkstone Pass to the east the mountain has the appearance of a steep rocky mountain, but from all other directions Red Screes shows a more gentle side.
From Ambleside to the south a long gentle slope climbs, with spectacular views throughout, over Snarker Pike, to the broad summit plateau of Red Screes. Other approaches include the steep climb from Hartsop over Middle Dodd or the easier ascent from Scandale Pass. A good path does however climb from Kirkstone Pass, a steep and rocky but well constructed path climbing between crags directly to the summit.
Those who reach the summit of Red Screes are rewarded with spectacular views, north over Brothers Water, south over Windermere to Morecambe Bay or in almost any other direction to the high mountains of the Lake District.
