"Carl Side is a splendid climb in itself, with a glorious view south."
A. Wainwright

Carl Side lies at the head of the Southnerdale Valley, to the north west the ridge descends over Long Side and Ullock Pike down a fine ridge towards Bassenthwaite, to the east the steep slopes climb to the summit of Skiddaw, the fourth highest peak in the Lake District.

A short shoulder climbs Carl Side from the south, climbing from the fields of Millbeck, from the valley below the shapely peak of Carsleddam looks a prominent feature, upon climbing though the summit of Carsleddam is seen to be just a short protuberance from the main ridge, without a separate summit, although it does make a fine viewpoint.
