"It's heathery top is a fine place for viewing the (greater) merit of other fells."
A. Wainwright

Little Mell Fell lies on the very edge of the Lake District fells, to the north east the land descends to Penrith and the Eden Valley, climbing to the Pennines beyond. In all other directions are fine views of the Lakeland Fells.

Great Mell Fell to the north west, 100 feet it's senior, is a more prominent sight on the horizon and is well known to many who travel along the A66 between Keswick and Penrith to the north, from the south Little Mell Fell is hidden by Gowbarrow Fell, on the shores of Ullswater.

A good lower level walk can be made by combining Great Mell Fell, Little Mell Fell and Gowbarrow Fell along with the wonderful Aira Force.
