"To the traveller starting the long climb up to Kirkstone Pass from Brothers Water the most striking object in a fine array of mountain scenery is the steep pyramid ahead."
A. Wainwright

The summit of Red Screes, high above the Kirkstone Pass descends north to the slightly lower satellite of Middle Dodd, a narrow grassy ridge with fine views all around, particularly north over Brothers Water.

The summit of Middle Dodd is usually visited as a short detour from the summit of Red Screes, although an easy route can be made from the top of Scandale Pass. The direct route up from Hartsop to the summit is free from difficulty underfoot, but is very steep.
