"It's associations with the Lake Poets who came to dwell at the foot of it's steep wooded slopes have invested it with romance, and it's commanding position overlooking Rydal Water brings it to the notice of the many visitors to that charming lake."
A.W Wainwright

The southern ridge of Fairfield descends towards Rydal over the summits of Great Rigg and Heron Pike before the sharp culmination on Nab Scar, from which the ground drops steeply down to the valley below at Rydal.

Strictly speaking the name Nab Scar refers to the crags on the southern face of the fell, overlooking Rydal Water, rather than the summit above.

The steep climb up the southern face is rewarded with spectacular views down over Rydal Water and Ambleside with Windermere beyond. A less frequented path climbs from Grasmere by Alcock Tarn to the summit of Nab Scar.
