Stone Arthur

Grid Reference: NY 34752 09233
Height: 500 metres/1640 feet

"The outcrop occurs where the gradual decline of the spur becomes pronounced and here are the short walls of rock that give Stone Arthur it's touch of distinction."
A Wainwright

From the summit of Great Rigg (itself a satellite of Fairfield) a subsidiary ridge descends to the south west, towards Grasmere, a steady ridge descending almost without break towards the valley below. The one feature on this ridge is a curious rocky formation, prominent on the skyline from Grasmere below, Stone Arthur.

The rocky summit of Stone Arthur is a wonderful viewpoint over the scenery to the west, particularly looking past Grasmere towards Easdale and Easdale Tarn.

A good circular walk can be made here climbing this ridge over Stone Arthur to Great Rigg and following the main ridge south to Nab Scar, descending back to Grasmere by the beautiful Alcock Tarn.
