"Stybarrow Dodd is the first of the group of fells north of the Sticks Pass and it sets the pattern for them all: sweeping grassy slopes, easy walking for the traveller who likes to count his miles."
A.W Wainwright

To the north of Sticks Pass the main Helvellyn ridge changes in appearance drastically, gone are the rocky outcrops and in their place are gentle grassy slopes, easy walking with stunning views throughout.

The only rock of any not on Stybarrow Dodd is on it's lower slopes, to the east small amounts of rock has been excavated in the mine workings above the Greenside Mines, but to the west there is some good rock 'in situ' as the fell descends towards Stannah and St John's In The Vale the streams turn into waterfalls and there are several rocky outcrops.
