"Lonely Ard Crags offers, especially in August, a climb up to a personal heaven of one's very own - at only 1800 feet!"
A Wainwright

The ridge of Ard Crags and Knott Rigg rise from the Newlands Valley above Rigg Beck in a narrow slender shoulder, in summer the heather along the ridge is a delight. This small ridge makes a wonderful short ridge walk when climbed from Rigg Beck, especially when combined with the descent from Knott Rigg above Ill Gill to Keskadale Farm.

The climb up the nose of Ard Crags from Rigg Beck is a good route, through bracken at first above Birk Rigg until the rocky Aiken Knott is reached from where after a short scramble the heathery north summit of Ard Crags is reached and the gentle ridge to the small summit cairn.

The gentle heathery ridge continues south from Ard Crags, a thin path through the heather leads to the grassy summit of Knott Rigg.
