Eel Crag (Crag Hill)

Eel Crag (Crag Hill)

Grid Reference: NY 19267 20364
Height: 839 metres/2753 feet

"Dale Head has much in common with Eel Crag in the Grasmoor group. Their summits are focal points of high country, the meeting place of ascending ridges. Both have craggy northern fronts, darkly shadowed, and easy southern approaches. Both enjoy extensive views of great merit, particularly northwards to Skiddaw."
A Wainwright

Eel Crag or Crag Hill, is the hub of many ridges above Buttermere and the Newlands Valley, although Grasmoor is the higher fell all the ridges here radiate from Crag Hill, west a shoulder climbs to the broad summit of Grasmoor, south a ridge descends over Wandope and Whiteless Pike towards Buttermere, to the east a long ridge descends over Sail and Scar Crags before crossing Causey Pike to terminate at Rowling End. Northwards a shoulder crosses Coledale Hause before climbing to the summits of Hopegill Head and Grisedale Pike.

Crag Hill is usually crossed as part of the Newlands Horseshoe, a wonderful ridge walk from Braithwaite, but it can also be climbed from Buttermere, the Whiteless Pike ridge being a particularly good route.
