"Make a special note of the Scope End ridge: this route, on an enchanting track along the heathery crest, is really splendid."
A Wainwright

Similar to the nearby Robinson, Hindscarth climbs above the Newlands Valley on a fine narrow ridge, climbing eventually to a broad summit, joined at it's southern end to the ridge encircling the head of the Newlands Valley and climbing to the summit of Dale Head.

Usually climbed as part of the Newlands Horseshoe, when traversing between Robinson and Dale Head, a fine long ridge walk from Little Town in the Newlands Valley. The northern ridge of Scope End should also be of interest, this wonderful ridge climbs above Newlands Church over a series of narrow heather covered ridges.

Newlands Church, the small whitewashed church at the foot of Scope End is a well known local landmark, rebuilt in 1843. In May 1826 Wordsworth and his daughter were on a walking trip from Rydal Mount, and the poet was so impressed with the appearance of the Church through the trees, that he wrote a poem 'To May'. The poem is on display in the Church. The small building next to the church was the school house, built by parishioners in 1887 it stayed open until 1967.
