Long Side

Grid Reference: NY 24881 28441
Height: 734 metres/2408 feet

"The highest point in the lofty, steep sided ridge rising between Bassenthwaite Lake and the 'hidden' valley of Southerndale is a small and shapely pyramid delicately poised above a rough, shadowed declivity facing into the massive breast of Skiddaw."
A. Wainwright

The summit of Long Side, on the wonderful western ridge climbing over Ullock Pike and Long Side to Carl Side before the steep slopes lead to the summit of Skiddaw makes the best approach to the summit of Skiddaw. The long narrow ridge climbs with much of interest over the splendid Ullock Pike to Carl Side where the full panorama to the south is revealed, with stunning views over Derwentwater and down along the Borrowdale Valley to the high mountains beyond.

The deep valley of Southnerdale, which the Long Side ridge encloses is a wonderful hidden place, unseen from almost everywhere except the ridges above is well worth exploration, and can be visited upon returning towards High Side from Skiddaw, making a wonderful circular walk.
