Grid Reference: NY 22670 08385
Height: 910 metres/2986 feet

"Nobody who is familiar with the topography of the Scafell area will have any doubts why Great End was so named: there could not have been a more descriptive choice for the tremendous northern buttress of the mass."
A Wainwright

The northern ridge of Scafell Pike crosses the subsidiary summits of Broad Crag and Ill Crag before coming to a tumultuous end in the huge dome of Great End. More famous for it's vast north facing crag Great End is the Mecca for winter climbing in the Lake District, in summer the gullies on this huge crag are always damp and unpleasant, but the crag is transformed in winter to an amazing array of winter climbing routes, which due to it's northerly aspect and height mean that it is often in good condition when other crags are not.

Walking routes to the summit of Great End are fewer than climbing routes, in addition to the usual route from Esk Hause a good and interesting route climbs The Band, the north western spur of the mountain, which climbs from Sty Head Pass.
