"The screes, when seen in the light of an evening sun, make a picture of remarkable colour and brilliance: a scene unique in this country."
A Wainwright

Many people stop by the roadside when travelling along the Wasdale Valley to marvel at the scene of Wastwater with the screes beyond, one of the most famous views in the Lake District, equally impressive is the view when looking down from the heights above the screes towards Wast Water and across the valley.

Illgill Head is the highest of the two peaks on this ridge, climbing above Burnmoor Tarn the steep screes are in sharp contrast to the gentle grassy slopes to the south and east.

The ridge continues West from Illgill Head, where a good path traverses above the screes, with stunning views throughout, to the summit of Whin Rigg.
