"the narrow strip of rough ground between the cairn and the rim of the western crags is a fine perch to study the massive architecture of Gable Crag and the deep pit of stones below it: this is a tremendous scene." |
A Wainwright

Sitting in the shadow of it's neighbour Great Gable, Green Gable sits at the head of the Ennerdale Valley with impressive views down into the deep valley below and across Windy Gap and Stone Cove to the huge face of Gable Crag, below the summit of Great Gable.
On the western slopes of Green Gable runs Moses Trod, a fine path traversing the fell side from above Honister Pass to Beck Head and down to the Wasdale Valley providing an easy path to the heights of both Green Gable and Great Gable. Tradition held that a man called Moses Rigg, a Honister quarryman, distilled whisky, conveying the illicit liquor down to Wasdale Head in loads of slate, others think that Moses was smuggling Plumbago (early pencil lead) from the mines above Seathwaite.
Two ridges continue north from Green Gable, Base Brown to the north east can be crossed to descend to Gillercombe where a good path descends alongside the glorious Sour Milk Gill to Seathwaite. Another ridge continues north, climbing over bouldery ground to the summit of Brandreth where a good scenic ridge continues north to the summit of Grey Knotts before descending to Honister Pass.
