Kirk Fell

Grid Reference: NY 19498 10485
Height: 802 metres/2631 feet

"Great Gable dominates the scene but does not rob the view of detail, which is well distributed over all sectors. The Scafells look magnificent."
A Wainwright

Kirk Fell towers high above Wasdale Head, in fact the village of Wasdale Head sits at the foot of the slopes of Kirk Fell and not it's more famous neighbours. The broad, twin summited plateau of Kirk Fell offers a wonderful 360° view of the surrounding mountains and a particularly good view over the neighbouring Great Gable.

The steep grassy slopes above Wasdale Head are in stark contrast to the rocky outcrops facing the head of the Ennerdale Valley where Boat How Crags make an impressive view.

The mountain can be climbed direct from Wasdale Head but ascent via the cols on either side make easier and more popular routes. From Beck Head, between Kirk Fell and Great Gable an easy walk leads to the summit of Kirk Fell, but from Black Sail Pass, on the Pillar side of Kirk Fell it takes a rough scramble to reach the summit.

A fine traverse route across the northern slopes joins Black Sail Pass and Beck Head.
