“Those who hold that Borrowdale is the most beautiful of Lakeland valleys will learn that familiarity with its intimate detail only strengthens their conviction”
Morley Dobson
Troutdale Pinnacle is a fantastic route that climbs the full length of Black Crag. Starting from the lowest point possible it winds its way up the rock face in six amazing pitches to the highest point on the crag, which stands high above the canopy and provides breathtaking views down over Derwent Water.
The beauty of this climb is that there is next to no walk in to the start of the climb. We will start the day from the small village of Grange situated on the main Borrowdale road, and walk the short distance to the start of the climb.
“The mountains will always be there, the trick is to make sure you are too”
Hervey Voge
- 1.21m. Climb the crack, past a tree stump, to a ledge. Alternatively climb the wide crack 5 metres to the right to the same point. Move to a birch tree at the right end of the ledge. Climb the wall behind for 6 metres to another ledge and continue up a broken groove to a large block belay.
- 28m. Follow a groove on the right onto slabs. Climb these rightwards to a large ledge and block belay below a shattered corner.
- 10m. Ascend the steep corner on good holds, then step left to a small stance on the right extremity of a sweep of slabs.
- 21m. Traverse left and down the slabs below a steep wall on polished holds and pull up to some ledges.
- 12m. Continue easily up to the top of the pinnacle and an exposed belay.
- 13m. Climb the steep, exposed groove above until it abuts a steeper wall. Pull up left across this then go more easily up the rocks above to finish.
