- Ghyll Scrambling in Langdale
Lets face it, it's called the Lake District for the most obvious reason so what can you do on a rainy day?.....Yes, get wet!
This is a fun and exhilarating activity for all, best as a group activity, with fun challenges along the way from climbing a waterfall to jumping in the plunge pools. Your adrenaline will be pumping in these gorges which are naturally cut out by the flow of the water over the centuries.
All challenges and obstacles can be avoided if you wish and non swimmers need not feel left out as you will be fitted out with buoyancy aids. All safety equipment is included.
This event will take place in Stickle Ghyll, above the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in the Langdale Valley, a wonderful series of waterfalls, scrambles and pools giving a perfect half days challenge.
In Stickle Gill we start at the bottom of the gill and climb up the waterfalls, with plenty of great plunge pools along the way.
All technical equipment required will be provided by The Lake District Walker but expect to get wet so bring some spare clothing to change into afterwards and of course a towel.
Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above.

The Lake District Walker Review by N Cunningham
Overall Experience Fantastic afternoon at Stickle Ghyll. Neil was a superb guide and put us all at ease. We were a family of four with a 12yr old and a 10yr old and were the only ones booked on, so had Neil all to ourselves. The facilities at the meeting point were perfect, and easy to park and get changed. Our 10 year old was a bit reticent on the pool plunges, due to the water being so cold, but after some gentle encouragement from Neil, she embraced the challenge and threw herself in. Would highly recommend this to anyone. Such an enjoyable activity, and a change from the standard walking trails. (Posted on 26/10/2018)

Very highly recommended and we cant wait to do the next one. (Posted on 25/09/2017)

Great wet time had by all Review by Charlotte
Overall Experience 25/07/2017
Great fun would recommend to all!
John our guide was very knowledgable not only about the activity but also the area in general.
My 8yr old thoroughly enjoyed so much so he wanted to do it again, so we booked the Newlands for 2days later. It's the Lake District so you going to get wet so why not have a load of fun doing it! (Posted on 09/08/2017) -
Last minute decission Review by CMHughes
Overall Experience We were holidaying in bowness on solway and were looking for something a bit different to do. My brother in law suggested ghyll scrambling, which I hadnt heard of before. The lake district walker had a few slots for 6pm that evening so we decided to book. This was a great decission, we met john who gave a quick chat of what to excpect whilst sorting out our wet suits, hard hats etc. We then got changed before walking a few minutes up a track to the ghyll. After a breifing we started working our way up rock faces, waterfalls, wading and swimming through and jumping into plunge pools. All in all fantastic fun and after we finished we called in for a well earned pint with john. Highly recommended. (Posted on 04/10/2016)

Ghyll scrambling Review by Mark Woolcock
Overall Experience Great introduction to Ghyll scrambling. went with three sons ( aged 17, 15 and 10)- there was enough challenge for all of us, without anyone feeling 'out of their depth'. Great fun - all equipment provided and was of good quality. Great value and would thoroughly recommend. (Posted on 07/08/2016)

Brilliant Fun! Review by Emma
Overall Experience Spent a long weekend in Keswick with my best friend who picked this as our warm-up event to climbing Skafell Pike on the Saturday. Brilliant idea - we had so much fun with John as our guide - who knew splashing about in pretty chilly water in a wetsuit in June could be so hilarious; I haven't laughed that much in ages. Definitely a bit of a challenge (water is a lot stronger than it looks) but easier options all the way up the river for any who needed it! Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to feel like (or still is) a bit of a kid! (Posted on 04/07/2016)

Brilliant fun for all the family Review by lucy
Overall Experience We had a really great afternoon Ghyll Scrambling in Langdale. Two children aged 8 and 12 and 2 adults and it was manageable and fun for all of us. The setting was beautiful. There were opportunities to make the activity more or less challenging as you preferred which was great, the instructor was knowledgeable and professional and the small group size with just one other family made it personal and ensured we all got the most out of it. Would highly recommend. (Posted on 08/06/2016)

Langdale - Ghyll Scrambling Review by Mark
Overall Experience The whole experience was great. The instructor was very knowledgeable, the equipment for the activity was adequate and the location was breath-taking. Wholeheartedly recommend this experience. My 9 year old was able to take part and there is the option to move around the more tricky areas if necessary. All people in our party were catered for, in terms of ability... Fantastic Day....!!! (Posted on 10/05/2015)

Posted by John Scadding on Tuesday, 12 September 2017Yes, the public toilets on the National Trust car park have benches where we can get changed Sometimes these can be closed during the winter months or when the water supply is low in the summer, when this happens we will bring changing tents.
Question:
Are dogs allowed in the ghyll?

If I'm not taking part in the activity am I able to watch from the side?
