- The Yorkshire 3 Peaks
The Yorkshire Three Peaks is one of the great mountain challenges, we begin at Horton in Ribblesdale climbing Pen-Y-Ghent before the long walk north to Whernside, returning over Ingleborough.
A very long days walking but well within most walkers capabilities. Anyone retiring from the challenge will be escorted to the next checkpoint and arrangements will be made to collect you upon completion or to transport you back to the start depending on your circumstances. Thus allowing the challenge to continue without holding other walkers back!
This walk is great training for longer events, and it is often used as training for events like the National 3 Peaks Challenge, Kilimangaro or trekking in the Himalayas.
Summits included on this route:
Pen-Y-Ghent694 metres / 2290 feet
Whernside736 metres / 2428 feet
Ingleborough723 metres / 2385 feet
From Horton In Ribblesdale we climb onto the southern shoulder of Pen-Y-Ghent before continuing over the summit of Pen-Y-Ghent and descending to cross the large swathe of moorland between Pen-Y-Ghent and Ribblehead.
After setting off for the second leg of the trip from Ribblehead we cross the moorland below Ribblehead Viaduct to climb the eastern flanks of Whernside, crossing the ridge and descending steeply to the south where a short walk across the valley leads us to the third and final climb, the steep slog onto Ingleborough, the finest of the three peaks with wonderful views over the days route.
All that is left to do from the summit of Ingleborough is the long gentle descent back to Horton, crossing the railway line to the village.
Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above.

Completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks on 7 September Review by Melissa
Overall Experience Completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks on 7 September in a little over 10 hours, although both physically and mentally challenging, this personally would not have been achieved without the superb guidance received from our guide Robert. Highly recommended experience and made for an enjoyable day for our group size of 6. Keep up the good work Team!

Would really recommend, our group size was just six, we started at 8am at the car park in Horton and got back before sundown. It was a fantastic day! (Posted on 15/09/2024)

Yorkshire 3 Peaks Review by Steve Arnold
Overall Experience Did the Yorkshire 3 Peak with LDW and I must say how well organised it was in challenging conditions. Guides were first class and really friendly. Same could be said for the group of fellow walkers. I would highly recommend using LDW for your next challenge. (Posted on 12/06/2024)

Tough, long but fun day hike Review by Julian
Overall Experience This was my third hike with Lake District Walker and it was every bit as enjoyable as my previous treks. The guides, Phil and Richard, were very good and did a great job of keeping the group, of 20, together.
The hike began at the Pen-y-ghent cafe with a discussion about safety on the hike. It was also established if anyone had allergies that might need prompt attention along the way. Given the length of the hike, the guides identified bail out and cut off points along the way where the trip could be curtailed if things began to look like they weren't going to plan and continuing would endanger the group. There was a follow up talk from the local mountain rescue leader too.
At 0815, we began the hike out of Horton and up Pen-y-ghent, with no-one being rushed or lagging too far behind. By the time we reached the summit, the weather had closed in and the rain was there for the day. We pushed on to Ribblehead for lunch around 1215. After a break, we set off up Whernside, pausing only to take in a passing steam special, which brightened up the pouring rain no end, then continued up to the summit. The descent was slow due to the fact that the steep steps were quite slippery. We reached Philpin Campsite, and the weekend snack bar, slightly before the agreed cut off time of 1600. Several of the group decided they had had enough of the bad weather by this stage, and those who continued split into two groups, one fast and one slow, as we began the ascent of Ingleborough. We all reached the summit and headed down again for the final leg back to Horton. I think the faster group reached Horton just inside the 12 hours, though the slower group stayed together and got back in twelve and a half hours, at about 2045. Given the weather conditions, that was an achievement in itself, and a testament to both of the excellent guides who kept morale, and the pace, up. All in all a great fun day.
For those considering it, you should be aware of the various ways to hike it, to maximize what you will get out of the day. Firstly, you can do it solo or with a small group of people with similar levels of fitness, and competence for hiking such conditions, secondly, you can do it as a charity event with back up vehicles, or thirdly, you can hike it as a larger group, such as this trip. If you want to attempt a fast completion time, then you should probably be considering the first option, if you want an enjoyable walk with a chance to meet and chat with others and you aren't so bothered about the 12 hour time limit then the charity/large group hike maybe more to your tastes. As it turned out, the day I completed the walk (Sunday August 26), the Pen-y-ghent cafe wasn't clocking out hikers so it didn't count whether the circuit was completed within 12 hours or not. For those doing it as training for larger hikes, such as Kilimanjaro, then it is an excellent test, and taste, of what you can expect to face each day in terms of exertion without of course the altitude considerations. Anyone attempting a larger hike would do well to consider this hike to ensure their level of readiness before embarking. (Posted on 05/09/2018) -
Y3P Review by John Glennon
Overall Experience Would like to say a big thank you to Paul for getting us around the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. We were in a slower group than the rest but he kept going back and making sure everyone was doing okay. Was a late finish and the weather was not brilliant at all but still enjoyed it. We also managed to raise £300 for Marie Curie. Many thanks

Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge Review by Harriett Renolds
Overall Experience I booked the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge for myself and 4 others, after a terrible booking experience with another company.
I told the lady on the phone the issues I had and she gave me great reassurance about this company and the 15 years of experience. I was then given extra reassurance via email. This was great knowing already how much they care about their customers.
We started the challenge on the 7/7/18, with Neil leading and Robert keeping everyone at the back together.
The ladies in my group found this challenge difficult, but with the wonderful support and guidance from Neil they all completed it and well within the challenge time.
Neil went above and beyond with his support, his knowledge and compassion was phenomenal. I just couldn't thank him enough! The whole experience was wonderful from booking to completing.
A huge thank you to everyone involved and a special thank you to Neil. (Posted on 12/07/2018) -
Fantastic Experience Review by wendy
Overall Experience My son, partner and myself joined a walk led by James over the May bank holiday weekend. Our whole group completed the challenge within the time and all had a great day out. James was very good at keeping the whole group motivated with praise where deserved and pushing us on when needed. The summit of Whernside was extremely windy, we could barely kept upright, but he calmly led us safely across the ridge and back down the other side.
My partner is almost 60 and wouldn't have completed the challenge in less than 12hrs without James's help. A big thank you from the three of us. (Posted on 30/05/2018) -
Y3P Review by Zoe
Overall Experience I just wanted to tell you what a great day we had yesterday. Both guides were friendly and helpful, but we split off into a faster group with James, and he was just brilliant. It was challenging going up some peaks with winds of up to 50mph, but we felt totally safe with James guiding us. He was forever counting heads and making sure everyone was OK. Really great guy! A fab day. Feeling a little stiff this morning. (Posted on 28/05/2018)

Fantastic day Review by Jessica
Overall Experience Me and my friend joined a group of 8. The walk is definitely challenging and strong legs are needed! Our guide Neil was brilliant. He ensured everyone completed up to their abilities and kept people safe. He was supportive and was interesting to chat to. I'd definitely recommend the company and plan to do more...once I've recovered from this! (Posted on 12/09/2017)

Yorkshire 3 Peaks Review by Heidi
Overall Experience On 30th April, myself, sister and friend joined 3 others and our guide Neil on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks walk. We had a fantastic day without the pressure of navigating. Neil was professional, friendly and very encouraging when anyone needed extra support. We completed the challenge in 10 hours 25 minutes which was a nice comfortable pace. I would definitely choose the Lake District walker again in the future for a different challenge. Thank you Neil for such a successful and enjoyable experience. (Posted on 11/05/2017)

Yorkshire 3 Peaks Review by Rachel Fletcher
Overall Experience Had two excellent days of walking thanks to the Lake District Walker and especially to Neil our guide. The Yorkshire 3 Peaks was a tough day but being part of a well led and well organised group made it very enjoyable and we will hopefully be back for the Lake District 24 Peaks soon.
Thanks again. (Posted on 02/05/2017) -
A fantastic experience Review by Tammy
Overall Experience On 6th August I managed to take on an conquer the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. This was the first time i have used Lake District Walker and i am very pleased with the overall experience.
Lucky for me I was the only person on the walk and my guide (Ross) made it a memorable experience in more ways than one! His interesting stories, knowledge of the route and hiking kept me going along with his sense of humour and utter randomness! It was a gruelling walk in very warm weather but i felt supported all the way through. Given that there were also over 300 charity walkers on the route i also appreciated the opportunity to take the original route for a bit of peace and quiet.
Im not sure that i will be signing up to this challenge again any time soon but i have already recommended you to others! Thank you for helping me tick this off the bucket list! (Posted on 09/08/2016) -
A personal achievement Review by Beena
Overall Experience I just wanted to thank your company and James for making it possible for me to climb the three peaks I had set as my goals.
James was quietly confident and showed lots of patience. I wish him well ...he sounds like he knows where he wants to go!
And hopefully I will come back in the near future to do lots more. (Posted on 19/09/2015) -

Yorkshire Three Peaks Review by Denise
Overall Experience Hello, on May 25th Carolyn and I took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge along with other walkers. I just wanted to say a big thank you as we would never have done it without you. Firstly, actually booking the date with you made us feel committed and then having a guide gave us confidence and moral support. James was the guide you supplied for this day and may I say, he is an asset to your firm. He's calm, friendly, encouraging, professional and got a good sense of humor ( I hope his mum is proud). He not only looked after his group of walkers but was supportive to others. Had we not have signed ourselves up to take the challenge on with you I think we would have gone home after the first 10 minutes. Instead we completed in challenging weather within the allocated time.
Thank you again (Posted on 07/07/2015)

We plan to walk whatever the weather, unless it is dangerous to do so.
Mountain weather can be a little unpredictable, but we do keep an eye on the forecasts leading up to walks, should the forecast mean that the walk is not possible then we will contact you as soon as we have the forecast and offer you the following options:
- A more suitable walk on the same date taking into consideration the weather conditions
- A transfer to the same walk on another date
- A full refund
Question:
Are dogs allowed on this walk?
Answers:

Yes, dogs are allowed on all our walks.
However we do cross farmland and common land where animals will be grazing, there will be large sections of the walk, if not all, where dogs will be required to be on a lead.
