Catbells must be one of the best known fells in the Lake District, not only is it one of the most shapely summits, high above Derwentwater and in view from Keswick, Catbells also rose to prominence through the books of Beatrix Potter, Catbells was the home of Mrs Tiggywinkle.
Catbells is usually climbed from Hawse End where a wonderful path climbs the northern shoulder of the fell, high above Derwentwater with stunning views throughout, both over the lake to the east or the Newlands Valley to the west. The return to Hawse End can be made either along the lakeshore path or by the terraced path.
Those walking the higher terraced path will come across a memorial plaque to Hugh Walpole, who lived at Brackenburn, the house just below.
