Lets face it, it's called the Lake District for the most obvious reason so what can you do on a rainy day?.....Yes, get wet!
This is a fun and exhilarating activity for all, best as a group activity, with fun challenges along the way from sliding down waterfalls to jumping in the plunge pools. Your adrenaline will be pumping in these gorges which are naturally cut out by the flow of the water over the centuries.
All challenges and obstacles can be avoided if you wish and non swimmers need not feel left out as you will be fitted out with buoyancy aids. All safety equipment is included.
This event will take place in Stonycroft Gill, in the Newlands Valley, near Keswick, a wonderful series of waterfalls, scrambles and pools giving a perfect half days challenge.
In Stonycroft Gill we start at the top of the gill and slide down several rapids, with plenty of great plunge pools and jumps along the way.
All technical equipment required will be provided by The Lake District Walker but expect to get wet so bring some spare clothing to change into afterwards and of course a towel.
Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above.
Where to meet: Stoneycroft Bridge, Newlands
Postcode: CA12 5TS *
Grid Reference: NY 232 212
From Keswick: Leave Keswick on the A66 west, towards Workington and Cockermouth, after a short while turn left into the village of Braithwaite, passing the campsite and taking the first road on the left, signposted to the Newlands Valley, turn left over the bridge and past the village shop on continue on this road, about 800m after the cattle grid is crossed a layby will be seen to the left of the road, just after the entrance to Uzzicar Farm. We will meet on this layby.
There are no buses along the Newlands Valley.
Stagecoach bus timetables can be viewed here
Please bear in mind that the above postcode will not be perfect, the same postcode runs much of the length of the valley, please also follow directions above.
Each participant is expected to have suitable personal equipment for their activity this should include the following:

My boyfriend and I did this Ghyll scramble August 2018 and it was such good fun. John was a great guide, telling us the names of the slides and pools we got to jump into and taking good photos as we went! It felt like such a thrilling experience - and the jumps can be sidetracked if someone doesn't feel up to it at the time. The water felt fresh and it was good fun seeing a different side to the Lake District ! We have already booked another Newlands Ghyll Scramble for this summer - definitely recommend! My son and daughter (10 & 8 years old) went Ghyll scrambling with their dad in Newlands this week and had an amazing time. I was slightly worried that my 8 yo would struggle to keep up and suffer with the cold (it was 13 degrees and rainy) but she did brilliantly and both kids are now desperate to go again. They were really well looked after and absolutely loved the thrill of the slides and jumps. Thanks so much for a fantastic experience that they won’t forget. (Posted on 31/05/2024)

Thank you to John for an amazing afternoon Ghyll scrambling at Newlands. We all thoroughly enjoyed the sliding, jumping and scrambling. You took us all out of our comfort zone and the adrenaline was flowing. However, thanks to you we all felt safe and well looked after through out. We will be back! Thanks again - Karen, Rachel, debs, Maria, Helen, Lou and daredevil Abby! (Posted on 03/09/2017)

This is brilliant fun and I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants an exhilarating way to splash a smile across their face. My two lads (10 and 13) absolutely loved it and have not stopped asking to go back again - and we will certainly take the plunge again: TheLakeDistrictWalker are a safe pair of hands and couldn't have made it any better.
Thanks John - see you again! (Posted on 02/09/2017)

Oh my gosh! what a fabulous day. We had Ghyll Scrambled with John in Langdale last year and this was top of our list for this year's trip. We had a mixed party - two 11 year old boys, 2 14 year old girls a couple of 40 somethings and a couple of 70ish year olds. John took care of us all, went at our pace and made sure we always felt safe but still got the very most out of the day. Somehow we found ourselves getting stuck into things we wouldn't have thought about just moments earlier - sliding down chutes and jumping into the unknown - it was utterly brilliant and we all felt so energised and alive at the end - the question is how do we top it next year? Cheers John (Posted on 25/08/2016)

My two sons and a friend (aged 15 and 12) went Ghyll scrambling in Newlands Valley last week. They had an absolutely fantastic time, all equipment provided, the trip was safe, fun and exciting, I just wished I had done it with them - next time! We would definitely do this again and we would happily recommend! Thank you! (Posted on 19/08/2016)
