“There are no more delightful starting-points than Howtown or Martindale”
A Wainwright
A wonderful route taking in some of the most picturesque ridges and summits above Martindale and Ullswater including the summits of Place Fell, The Angletarn Pikes and Beda Fell.
“The charms of Angle Tarn, at all seasons of the year, are manifold: in scenic values it ranks amongst the best of Lakeland Tarns”
A Wainwright
From St Peters Church, Martindale we follow the lane towards Sandwick, past Doe Green to meet the footpath skirting around the northern flank of Sleet Fell, there are wonderful views over the northern half of Ullswater from this path and as we climb up above High Knott the views become more expansive.
The path brings us up onto the north eastern ridge of Place Fell at Low Moss, from here it's an easy walk along the grassy ridge to the summit of Place Fell, on of the best viewpoints over the Helvellyn range.
From the summit of Place Fell we descend south on the good path, dropping down to Boredale Hause, passing the remains of Chapel in the Hause, an ancient site of a church thought to be built by St Patrick and dedicated to St Martin of Tours.
From Boredale Hause a good path leads to the south, this is the route of the ever popular Coast to Coast path climbing below Stony Rigg until an easy route is found up to the summit of The Angletarn Pikes, a short distance off the path to the north.
From the summit of The Angletarn Pikes we walk north to meet the path crossing Heckbeck Head, this path descends onto the Beda Fell ridge, over Bedafell Knott and along the fine ridge to the summit of Beda Head, the summit of Beda Fell.
From Beda Head the path continues to descend along the wonderful ridge to Winter Crag and the path down to Winter Crag Farm.
The old church of St Martins is well worth a visit as we pass, a beautiful small church in a glorious location in the Martindale Valley.
From here it is a short walk back along the lane to the newer church of St Peters and our start point.
Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above.
