The ridge climbing south from Garburn Pass, between Troutbeck and Kentmere offers a good shorter walk, over grassy slopes with outstanding views throughout.

the gentle grassy slopes on this section of the ridge make a great shorter days walk well away from the hustle and bustle in other parts of the Lake District.

Sallows516 metres / 1693 feet
Sour Howes483 metres / 1585 feet

From Troutbeck we will climb to the Garburn Road, the ancient track climbing to Garburn Pass. When the track reaches Garburn Nook, the summit of Garburn Pass we will turn off the track to the south and follow the wall along the ridge.

A short walk from the wall will bring us to the summit of Sallows, a fine viewpoint over much of Lakeland and south towards Morecambe Bay.

After returning to the wall we will follow the ridge south to the summit of Sour Howes.

From Sour Howes we will follow the ridge to the south west, descending over the grassy slopes back down to the Garburn Road and back to Troutbeck.

Each participant will be required to bring suitable equipment for their chosen event, please see Kit List tab above.

Directions

From Windermere / Ambleside: From the A591, between Windermere and Ambleside turn onto the A592, Patterdale Road, climbing north on this road until Troutbeck Church is seen to the left, we will meet outside the church.

Bus Services

A seasonal bus runs to Troutbeck through the summer months, stopping at the meet point.

The 508 bus runs between Windermere and Patterdale through the summer months.

Each participant is expected to bring suitable personal equipment for the event.
This should include the following:

We plan to walk whatever the weather, unless it is dangerous to do so.

Mountain weather can be a little unpredictable, but we do keep an eye on the forecasts leading up to walks, should the forecast mean that the walk is not possible then we will contact you as soon as we have the forecast and offer you the following options:
- A more suitable walk on the same date taking into consideration the weather conditions
- A transfer to the same walk on another date
- A full refund

Yes, dogs are allowed on all our walks.

However we do cross farmland and common land where animals will be grazing, there will be large sections of the walk, if not all, where dogs will be required to be on a lead.
